girlboy girl formed in the spring of 1996 in Bristol, England. We first appeared on a compilation CD called Something Cool on Cher Doll Records of Seattle, in 1997, and in the same year our debut ep appeared on Orgasm Records of Paris, France.
1998 saw the release of a 7 track ep entitled Véritablement Pop on the Black Bean and Placenta label of California, which gained our first national airplay on the John Peel show. The autumn of that year saw us touring Belgium and Germany with Beatnik Filmstars

In 1999 another ep, Two Halves, followed on Skycap Records of Münster, Germany, gaining extensive Radio One airplay with John Peel and Steve Lamacq.

girlboy girl’s debut full length cd, Fresco, was released on Black Bean and Placenta on February 22nd 2000 receiving airplay on the John Peel show, and a tour of the US West Coast to promote this took place during July.

In May 1999 Jez left the band to free up more time for his own music (Tomorrow's World, Death by Chocolate and various other incarnations, some of which Rupert and Paula have appeared on). We then spent about a year failing to find a new drummer (we're a bit choosy when it comes to attitude). So for the US tour Stewart (Steward / Boyracer) kindly agreed to stand in for us.

Following the tour, Alan obviously felt he had reached the pinnacle of his musical potential and the only way was down, so he decided to leave the band to spend more time with his glittering academic career.

With the band down to two members, Rupert decided to pass the time by learning to play guitar a little better which led to the creation of Hewas, the girlboy girl acoustic project, and it was as Hewas that Rupert and Paula toured the States again in November 2000.

In 2001 we finally found a guitarist in Sean Taplin, formerly of Bristol band Sourpuss, and eventually when our friend Matty Green of Boyracer and Tall Boy fame moved to Bristol, we recruited him on drums, even though he's actually a guitarist. We then spent about a million years recording and re-recording our second lp and would surely have disappeared up our own asses if it wasn't for the excellence of the tunes we were working on...
