Hewas started out as the girlboy girl acoustic project but has taken on a life of its own and is likely to continue long after the band has become a minor footnote in the history of indie pop. Basically Rupert decided to try playing a solo acoustic gig at a studio party on 1st July 2000. Then when we were invited to tour the states again in November 2000, we were unable to do so as a band, so we thought why not go as an acoustic thingy, which meant we had to think of a name for it quick, and the name we came up with was Hewas (a Cornish word meaning a place you live in the summer). So we got together a bunch of new acoustic songs and a couple of gbg ones, with Paula contributing violin and melodica and the odd backing vocal. And off we went, touring with Steward, Jen Turrell and A Boy Named Thor. Matty who was later to become gbg drummer met up with us in Boston, accompanying Stewart and also playing what I think was his first ever Tall Boy set in a vegetarian restaurant in Boise, Idaho. Well you have to start somewhere. Jen & Jason had arranged a massive tour circumnavigating the United States: Paula played on the first 7 dates (Philadelphia – Chicago) so then Rupert went on to play solo for the next 8 (Omaha – Portland) but with some assistance from Jen on violin and backing vocals. Then Rupert flew home and you would think that that meant no more Hewas on the tour, but Paula was back at the following show in San Francisco and the others teamed up with her to do one Hewas song. So far Hewas has been very lazy and only produced one 7" single (it’s quite hard to find so write if you want a copy). However we are promising to record a full length cd and will continue to promise that until either we do so, or people get bored of our empty promises. Meanwhile, unlike gbg, Hewas has actually been playing the odd show here and there, and if you want us to play in your town or country do get in touch as shows are pretty easy to arrange, assuming that you live in a wealthy nation with good infrastructure (we also play in Britain as it’s local).
