SOL – Solar Granular Synthesis

SOL Solar Granular Synthesis instrument uses 40 days of solar radar data measuring changes in the sun’s surface. This was sped up 42,000 times to bring it into the audible range. Two of these data sets were loaded into Steinberg’s Padshop, tuned to a musical note and granular synthesis used to create deeply textural endless morphing waveforms.
The Michelson Doppler Imager satellite data was prepared by A. Kosovichev of the Solar & Heliospheric Observatory, a project of international collaboration between ESA and NASA studying the Sun from its deep core to the outer corona and the solar wind.

SOL Presets:

  • SOL Original Solstice

  • SOL Shimmer Pad
  • SOL Space Wind Pad
  • SOL Fretfree Bass
  • SOL One Mode Organ
  • SOL Three Modes Organ

Also included are “lite” versions of each of the presets above. These have more basic UI which works well for GarageBand on the iPad.
